Art Made to Order — "Draw the Line" a fundraiser for KKT

Whatever your plans are for Friday night (2/17) do the right side of your brain a favor and start off your evening on the lanai in front of Kumu Kahua Theatre in Chinatown. There you'll find artists like Solomon Enos, Ryan Higa, Jon J. Murakami, Aaron Padilla, Cade Roster, and Mike Watanabe to name a few, all creating in their own artistic styles—live! 

I attended the event last year and have my very own made-to-order Solomon Enos original to prove it. I'm looking at it right now. An impression of two people on the beach watching a full midnight moon set over the water. My honey surprised me. He described to Enos a very special moment—a memory from our early days of courtship—which the talented artist then turned into a work of art. 

So sweet. Just the thing to melt a girl's heart...a belated valentine, maybe...Each piece sells for $20 with all the proceeds going to support the theatre.

This year, as if the art wasn't reason enough to go, Stephanie Keiko Kong will be providing live music as well. I've heard her sing and it's a beautiful thing. There will also be food and wine for sale and coupons for discounted framing.

Afterwards, you can check out Kumu's current production, the absolutely stellar Saturday Night at the Pāhala Theatre. If you've already seen it, go again—it's that good! Or you could head up the street to Mark's Garage to catch one of three performances of The Vagina Monologues.

Cuz That's What the Play's About — ONE COMEDY OF ERRAS at KKT

Shawn Anthony Thomsen is not only my friend, but also one of my theatre heroes. Not the kind of hero that basks in the glory of constant praise with puffed-out chest and arms akimbo. The kind of hero that works long and hard, day after day, for all the right reasons. The kind with a touch of genius tempered by a dash of humility. What Theatre Should Be — SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE PAHALA THEATRE at KKT

“The dramatist who is not a poet is only half a dramatist”—John Howard Lawson, Theory and Technique of Playwriting (298) In other words, plot can only get you halfway. The language of a play must—in order for the work to transcend the obvious, the mundane, the predictable, the banal—be poetry. A poem is not a play, but put the right collection of poems in the right hands and—voila! You have the most exciting and engaging production I’ve seen in any theatre, anywhere, ever. Seriously, it’s that good (in my limited experience and humble opinion). Saturday Night at the Pāhala Theatre is an award-winning collection of poems by local author and educator Lois-Ann Yamanaka. Director Harry Wong III and his team have fashioned the book into a play, rearranging some things while keeping the integrity of the original work firmly intact.
